Custom Fishing rods

Building custom fishing rods is one of my oldest art forms and dates back to middle school. I've built and rebuilt dozens of rods from ultralight freshwater to heavy saltwater trollers.  They are the quintessential tool that I can never have too many of.

Rod assembly is an art of its own, but this page focuses solely on what are known as ‘butt wraps’ - signature designs located just above the rod handle. All the designs are produced by layering individual threads, sometimes hundreds of them. The nylon and metallic threads of varying diameters and determine fill characteristics. They must be tightly laid to eliminate gaps in order to produce the cleanest designs. Intricate designs can take several days to weave.
