KAMon

Mon and kamon are japanese emblems used to decorate and identify an individual or family. While mon is an encompassing term that may refer to any such device, kamon refers specifically to emblems used to identify a family.

This kamon was designed for my own family and it is one of my favorite pieces. It captures my love of nature - from the ocean to the mountains - and finding balance and harmony therein.

It began as a digital stencil that was transferred to decorative paper and then painted. The kamon is pinned like a scientific specimen to a wooden plaque that was fire-preserved using an elegant Japanese technique known as shou sugi ban.
