slate carvings
Years ago I encountered a pile of antique slate shingles for sale at a flea market. Initially purchased for my DIY wedding, I had several left over that I moved across country - twice! Wanting to create special housewarming gift for a new friend, I was inspired to revisit stone carving and remembered I had these shingles.
Digital prototypes were created and transferred to the tiles by hand. The lettering, carved with a rotary tool, was later inlaid with gold iridescent paint and then protected with stone sealer. I love the gold and black contrast, and the unique glow of the lettering when the sun hits it just right. Decorative easels were constructed from saplings outside my studio.
